The North American forest industry faces new and monumental challenges in the highly fluid global manufacturing and consumer marketplace. For over 100 years, the North American sector has been the world-leading producer and consumer of forest-based products, but now it must compete with global supplies of raw materials, and a global manufacturing base for our still-dominant consumer market. While our own consumption will not slow, worldwide demographics will likely relegate the North American marketplace to a lesser rank in coming decades. In addition to constantly increasing demands in North America, growing populations and economies in China, India, and Pakistan will fuel worldwide demand for forest products, augmented by increased knowledge and acceptance of wood building systems and improved standards of living across the globe. Increasing demand for nonrenewable industrial materials to build infrastructure in the aforementioned countries may also increase demand and consumption for renewable forest-based materials and products, from a worldwide price competitive basis.
